Climbing in Railay, Thailand
Getting There
Yes getting there is as easy as everyone says. I was a little
skeptical because I've travelled to places that are supposed
to be "easy" to get to only to waste a day trying to figure
out where to go. We flew from Bangkok to Krabi, took a taxi
(500 Baht, ~ $12 US) to Ao Nang, walked 30 feet to the beach
and grabbed a long tail boat to Ton Sai where we stayed the
first night.
Where to stay
We were there in low season so the rates in Railay were
affordable (that and we were only there for four nights). Most
climbers that are going to stay for an extended period of time
stay at Ton Sai beach. Ton Sai is only a 10 minute walk from
Railay. The hike is either over a small jungle trail from the
north end of
Railay west or along the water at low tide.
Ton Sai features many bungalows, simply walk around to find the best deal or pay slightly more for nicer bungalows. Railay is more touristy and the resort part but has better restaurants and more happening. We ended up staying in Railay just to avoid the hike between the bars and the bungalow. Good food can be found at both Railay (west side a bit better) and Ton Sai.
Climate
Again we were there in low season (early September) when it
was very hot and humid. We would climb in the morning and in
the evening and never in the sun. You had to accept that you
would be drenched in sweat no matter how hard the climb
was. Climbing on some of the steeper routes can be done in the
rain but it didn't usually rain for more than 15 minutes at a
time.
I've been told that the best time of year to visit is between November and March, although it will be very busy over Christmas time.
The Climbing
Yeah there's some climbing there. Unfortunately we were only
there for four days so we didn't get a lot of climbing
done. Here's a few photos though:
