Overview:
The Red River Gorge is located in eastern Kentucky in the Daniel Boone National Forest. The climbing here is gorgeous, steep, pumpy sandstone with
almost unlimited rock. The best time of year is October and November when it is usually pretty dry and cooler conditions. The spring has great
temperatures but tends to be a little wetter, while the summer is usually a bit on the warm/humid side. If it's a sunny day in the winter then it's
climbable.
Info:
Much of the rock in the Red is on private property and access can be an issue that changes regularly. Check with the
Red River Gorge Climber's Coalition for regular updates on access. I
strongly encourage anyone who climbs at the Red and enjoys the access to the climbing to donate to the coalition. These guys are working hard
to purchase and maintain access to many of the climbing areas. In
addition there is a great site, redriverclimbing.com, that
hosts a discussion forum and online guides.
Here's a link to the 10 day weather forecast for Slade, Ky. There are quite a few accomodation options around Slade and in the Daniel Boone National Forest. If you enjoy hanging around other climbers and being a part of the scene then Miguel's is the place to stay. Generally a younger, louder crowd but for $2/night you can pitch your tent. Even if you don't stay at Miguel's you should check out the pizza. I stayed at Lago Linda's, a quieter, larger campsite located about 3 miles from The Motherlode. It's $5/night for camping plus they have cabins for rent or electrical hookups for a bit more. A guidebook is pretty much mandatory if you haven't been to the Red before. Just about every climbing area has a different parking spot and a different approach. Photos:
